Four telecommunication giants to pilot a blockchain-powered solution

Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile US, Telefonica, and Orange will be joining forces to partner on a collaborative venture towards extending blockchain technology to roaming agreements between telecom operators.

The idea was originated and designed by the operator’s international wholesale unit Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-Labs) and Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier. And the global mobile carrier giant GSM Association is handling the trial process.

The blockchain solution sees to dramatically reduce the complexity of the current process including writing, signing and physically executing roaming discount arrangements between the operators.

Furthermore, the technology is believed to facilitate the roaming wholesale workflow in time, e.g. the agreement process between the operators.

Thanks to new services like NB-IoT, LTE-M or VoLTE and other quality-based services, the inter-operator discount agreements and respective settlements are likely to highly advance in their complexity. And given that the inter-operator workflow in roaming has not seen any change for the last 20 years, such development should be quite a breath of fresh air.

As Rolf Nafziger, Senior Vice President of Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, states:

"This blockchain-based solution is the start of automating sections of our workflow. It will put us in a position to handle the additional complexity while increasing overall efficiency.”
